According to history, Mr. Betty became the Judge-Magistrate of Barisal in 1807. Mirzaganj Thana was formed with Patuakhali in 1812 during Beti's rule due to the growth of settlements in the Southern Sundarbans. Later, 4 separate Munsifi Chowkis were set up in Barisal in 1817 to promote civil rule. These are Baufal, Kaukhali, Mehendiganj and Koter Hat Chowki. Brajmohan Dutt became the first Munsef of Baufal Chowki. On June 1, 1860, the post was transferred from Baufal to Laukathi. Braj Mohan Dutt was also Munsef of Laukathi Chowki. In 1871 Patuakhali was converted into subdivision. At first, the court was held in a house made of bamboo and thatch, so the local people called it Bausha Court. Then Braj Mohan Dutt held both the positions of Munsef and Deputy Magistrate. The new subdivision is named Patuakhali. A century has passed.
Coastal district Patuakhali is established as the 18th district with the title of Sagarkanya of southern Barisal division of Bangladesh, famous for the rare sight of sunrise and sunset on the same beach. On March 9, 1969, Patuakhali district was formally inaugurated by the then Governor of East Pakistan, Vice Admiral S. M. Ahsan. The first District and Sessions Judge Court was established on 10 September 1969 and Mr. Md. Anwar Hossain joined as District and Sessions Judge on the same date. 34 District and Sessions Judges were working in Patuakhali District and Sessions Judge Court so far. Present District and Sessions Judge Mr. Rokhsana Parveen joined on March 2, 2019. Patuakhali district headquarters formed in the Meghna river basin is divided by the river on all four sides, the district has one of the largest 5 chowki courts in the country, which has made it easy to get the services of the people seeking justice. Patuakhali District has 1 District and Session Judge Court, 1 Additional District and Session Judge Court, 3 Joint District and Session Judge Courts, 6 Assistant Judge Courts. Although there are 8 administrative upazilas of Patuakhali Sadar, Baufal, Kalapara, Galachipa, Mirzaganj, Dashmina, Dumki and Rangabali, there is no assistant judge court for Dumki and Rangabali. Kalapara Assistant Judge Court has been existing as Chowki Court since its creation. There are 2 tribunals in Patuakhali district. The Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal was established on January 19, 2002, whose first judge was Mr. Aminul Islam. So far 10 judges were working. District and Sessions Judge Mr. Md. Mainul Haque joined on 09/02/2020 and is currently serving as a Tribunal Judge. The Special District Judge Court was established on February 14, 2001, the first judge of which was Mr. Md Sharif Hossain. Till now 12 judges were working. District and Sessions Judge Mr. Abu Naser Md. Jahangir Alam joined on 02/10/2019 and is currently working as a Judge of the Court. The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court at Patuakhali was established on 1 November 2007 after the separation of the historic judiciary. The first Chief Judicial Magistrate was Kazi Golam Sarwar. So far 7 judges were working as Chief Judicial Magistrate. Present Chief Judicial Magistrate Md. Jamal Hossain joined on May 30, 2018 and is currently working. Patuakhali has 1 Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, 1 Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, 2 Senior Judicial Magistrate Courts at Patuakhali Sadar and Baufal, 1 Judicial Magistrate Court located at Dumki-District Town. There are Senior Judicial Magistrate Chowki Courts in 4 upazilas under Chief Judicial Magistrate. Which are located in Kalapara, Mirzaganj, Dasmina and Galachipa and the activities of the said courts started from 1st November 2007 after the separation of Judiciary. Judiciary department is working to establish justice in Patuakhali district.
